Analogue
Analogue means a signal that varies continuously, as FM radio does. It is the opposite of a digital signal made of numbers.
An analogue signal varies smoothly, in the same shape as the sound it carries. FM radio is the classic example. Any disturbance in the signal changes the sound directly, which is why weak FM reception crackles and hisses.
A digital signal works differently. It is coded as numbers, the radio decodes them, and below a certain strength the decoding simply fails. This explains why DAB+ goes silent at a weak signal instead of crackling.
RTS describes DAB+ as the digital radio that replaces analogue FM. In Switzerland FM is not disappearing, however, and Parliament decided in December 2025 to continue it.
