Emergency information
Emergency information is a warning or instruction that authorities send to the public by radio in a crisis.
Emergency information means messages that the authorities want the public to hear quickly, for example in a crisis or disaster. Radio is a traditional channel for it because it works with a simple battery device.
SRF points out that DAB+ can switch to a more robust protection level, called EEP-1A, for use in shelters, so that the signal survives difficult conditions. This is a technical setting at the transmitter, and the listener does not need to do anything.
A battery-powered DAB+ radio can therefore be worth keeping in a household, as long as it picks up stations at home.
