Simulcast

Simulcast means broadcasting the same programme at the same time on two systems, for example on FM and on DAB+.

Simulcast is the same programme sent on two systems at once. In radio it usually means that a station is on FM and on DAB+ at the same time.

It matters in Switzerland because of the licence rules. BAKOM’s page on the award of FM licences says that new operators must broadcast their FM programmes identically on DAB+ at the same time. For the 2026 frequency packages, a radio that wanted FM frequencies had to be receivable on DAB+ in its area.

For a listener, simulcast means a choice. A station can be heard on whichever receiver you have, and the programme is the same on both.
